Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test Other methods used in molecular tests include CRISPR, isothermal nucleic acid amplification, digital polymerase chain reaction, microarray analysis, and next-generation sequencing. As of 2021, the most common form of molecular test is the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test. These are called nucleic acid or molecular tests, after molecular biology. There are multiple types of tests that look for the virus by detecting the presence of the virus's RNA. Tests that look for the viral antigens (parts of the virus) are called antigen tests. Detection of the virusĭetection of the virus is usually done either by looking for the virus's inner RNA, or pieces of protein on the outside of the virus. Other techniques include a CT scan, checking for elevated body temperature, checking for low blood oxygen level, and detection by trained dogs. Positive viral tests indicate a current infection, while positive antibody tests indicate a prior infection. Methods Explanation of the underlying pathophysiology pertaining to diagnosis of COVID-19 Rapid self-tests and point-of-care testing are also available and can offer a faster and less expensive method to test for the virus although with a lower accuracy. Test analysis is often performed in automated, high-throughput, medical laboratories by medical laboratory scientists. Because SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurs days after exposure (and before onset of symptoms), there is an urgent need for frequent surveillance and rapid availability of results. This variation has likely significantly impacted reported statistics, including case and test numbers, case fatality rates and case demographics. Individual jurisdictions have adopted varied testing protocols, including whom to test, how often to test, analysis protocols, sample collection and the uses of test results. It is used to assess disease prevalence, which aids the estimation of the infection fatality rate. They are less useful for diagnosing current infections because antibodies may not develop for weeks after infection. Antibody tests (serology immunoassays) instead show whether someone once had the disease. Molecular tests for viral presence through its molecular components are used to diagnose individual cases and to allow public health authorities to trace and contain outbreaks. The two main types of tests detect either the presence of the virus or antibodies produced in response to infection. The US CDC's COVID-19 laboratory test kitĬOVID-19 testing involves analyzing samples to assess the current or past presence of SARS-CoV-2.

Generally, the exemptions discussed above only apply to "white collar" employees. The outside sales employee exemption applies to those whose primary duty is to make sales or obtain orders or contracts outside of their place of business. This includes computer system analysts, programmers, and software engineers. The computer employee exemption applies to those who earn a minimum of $684 in salary, or are compensated at a rate of $27.63 per hour. Some other common exemptions exist, including exemptions for computer employees and outside sales employees. Some professions that fit within these categories include lawyers, physicians, teachers, architects, registered nurses, writers, journalists, actors, and musicians. The creative professional's work must require invention, imagination, originality, or talent in a recognized artistic or creative field. In the case of a learned professional, the employee must primarily perform work that requires advanced knowledge, defined as work that is predominantly intellectual in character in the fields of science or learning. This exemption includes both "learned professionals" as well as "creative professionals." In both cases, the $684 minimum salary must still be met. This includes roles such as human resource staff, public relations, payroll, and accounting. Among other requirements, these employees must also perform non-manual office work directly related to management or general business operations to qualify for the administrative employee exemption. Like executive and professional exemptions, administrative exemption still requires an employee to earn a minimum salary of $684 per week. The employee must also supervise at least two other employees and have primary duties involving some level of control over the hiring and firing process of other employees. On top of needing to meet the requirement of earning a minimum salary of $684 per week, employees that qualify for the executive employee exemption must perform executive duties such as managing the enterprise as a whole or a department or subdivision within the enterprise. Department of Labor, but below is a brief summary of the three main categories of exempt job duties. Further detail is available through the U.S. The employee performs exempt job duties (discussed below)Įxempt job duties are categorized mainly as executive, professional, and administrative job duties. The employee is paid on a salary rather than an hourly basis. The employee is paid at least $35,568 per year ($684 per week). For most professions, if an employee meets the following three rules, the employee is an exempt employee: Department of Labor resources for a list of typical exemptions, but note that the list is not necessarily exhaustive. Certain job types are exempt by definition, including commissioned sales employees, computer professionals, farm workers, drivers, salesmen, seasonal workers, and those performing executive, administrative, or professional roles. Most workers that are paid an hourly wage fall under this category.Įxempt employees are those that are not protected by the FLSA and are not entitled to overtime pay. A non-exempt employee that is not paid overtime wages can file an FLSA overtime claim through the U.S. Employers are also required to pay these workers an overtime rate of 1.5 times their standard rate when they work more than 40 hours per workweek. Non-exempt employees are employees that are entitled to minimum wage as well as overtime pay under the FLSA. As such, it is important both as an employer and as an employee to understand one's position. In addition, many states also have wage and hour laws. Most workers are classified as either exempt or non-exempt employees, and are protected by a number of requirements placed by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). There are also regulations surrounding what constitutes hours worked, as well as regulations governing recordkeeping and child labor. Non-exempt employees (see below) that are covered by the FLSA are also entitled to an overtime rate at least 1.5 times that of their standard rate for hours worked over 40 hours per workweek (defined as any fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 hours). Most states in the United States have a minimum wage higher than $7.25. In cases where the state in which the employee works also has a minimum wage, the employee is entitled to the higher of the two wages. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour at the time of writing (Jan. Shutterstock‘s collection of images includes tons of vector images available for download, like fonts, patterns, and illustrations. pdf (Portable Document Format only when saved from vector programs) Vector files can be saved or edited in these formats: Vectors are ideal for large or small format prints, because rasterized designs will lose quality when resized. Both logos and icons require immense details and many size options, usually depending on their application.įor example, you might use a logo on something as small as a business card or something as large as a billboard. Vectors’ scalability make them ideal for design work consisting of logos and icons. Avoid raster-based programs, such as Adobe Photoshop, when incorporating vector elements that need to be scaled. Programs such as Adobe Illustrator or Sketch are best used to create and manipulate vector images. You must have access to vector-based programs in order to edit the native files. While a vector image file has many advantages, there are compatibility issues when shared. This comes in handy when there are restrictions to file sizes or image storage. Image via NataliaKo.Ī vector image’s formulaic makeup keeps file sizes to a minimum in comparison to its raster counterparts. Elements like fonts render the same way-when sized up or down, they retain their quality. They’re made of paths and curves dictated by mathematical formulas. These paths and curves are produced exclusively through design softwares designed for vectors, like Adobe Illustrator or Sketch.ĭue to their algorithmic makeup, vectors are infinitely scalable, and remain smooth and crisp even when sized up to massive dimensions.Įven when scaled to substantial proportions, this pattern below remains clean and exact. Vectors use a different approach to image renderings. Some files take up additional data and use higher resolutions, while others take up less storage, but tend to be lower in resolution and quality. While all of these display pixels, each file format has its own distinct display settings. Raster files are saved in various formats: Avoid using them to design logos and icons. To edit these images, you need access to raster-based programs like Adobe Photoshop or Shutterstock Editor. For design work, it’s best to use these programs for photography and imagery only. And, when these images are uploaded online, the end result is a raster image. When you take a picture with a phone or a camera, the image is recorded as pixel data. Raster images are used in photography and digital applications. Tip: You can quickly cut down file size by reducing the resolution to 72 PPI for online images. An illustration with higher DPI (dots per inch) or PPI (pixels per inch) will be larger in size and data, which can be worrisome when there are limits to image storage or restrictions on uploaded file sizes. Image via NataliaKo.ĭue to the abundance of pixels in a raster image, the file sizes can be substantial. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to only downsize a raster image to avoid heavy pixelation. Obvious pixels make an image look unprofessional and unsightly. This is a key indicator of a raster-based image. Notice how the edges of the tropical pattern below become pixelated and jagged when magnified. When you zoom in on an image, the pixels become more apparent while the details of the image become blurry. The more pixels in an image the higher the quality, and vice versa. These pixels contain bits of color and, when combined, they build images. If you surf the web, chances are you’ve seen a raster image. Raster, or bitmap, images consist of tiny squares called pixels. Do you use raster or vector images? Raster images are made up of pixels, while vector images are formed by mathematical curves and paths.īeing comfortable with the ins and outs of both formats and how they translate when exported is an essential skill for every designer. With so many images to choose from online, it can be overwhelming to determine which file formats to begin with. Do you know the difference between a raster and vector file? This quick overview will help you differentiate for an improved design workflow. Protect branch lines exposed to temperatures below freezing. If you live in a humid environment and rely on the Motorguard to remove moisture, you’ll end up with a soggy filter that looks like a wet roll of toilet paper every couple weeks and needs to be replaced or dried out. Desiccant air dryer is ideal for drying small volumes of air. The Motorguard will also catch moisture but being a sealed unit it has no way to get rid of that moisture. For better drainage, basil works best in containers or raised beds. Ideally, the pH of the soil should ideally be in the range of 6.0 to 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral). Soil should be moderately fertile and moist but well-draining. Planting and Growing Information:īasil will grow best in a location that receives 6 to 8 hours of full sun daily, but it can also perform well in partial sun. While the process of growing herbs indoors is easy, basil only grows in the summer and only once the soil has warmed up, so plan accordingly. To maintain the strength of the basil, keep harvesting the leaves. If you plant seeds or transplants after all danger of frost has passed and the soil is warm, it will create a large harvest within weeks. Whichever method you choose, use frozen basil within a year.Basil is a warm-weather, fragrant herb that’s great for flavor and aroma.Omit any cheese from the recipe if you plan to freeze pesto. Similarly, prepare basil pesto in quantity, and then freeze in small containers.Peel off the wax paper and store the basil mixture in plastic bags. Drop teaspoonfuls of this mixture onto wax paper-lined baking sheets and freeze. You can also mix one-fourth-cup chopped basil with two teaspoons of vegetable or olive oil.Freeze whole leaves in small quantities in small plastic bags or chop up the leaves into small pieces and place them in an ice cube tray topped off with a little water.Freezing is another method of preserving basil and usually results in a product with a flavor more like fresh basil.Basil leaves turn an unpleasant brown color when air-dried. If any sign of moisture occurs, empty the container and repeat the drying process. If stored properly, dried basil should keep for about a year.Once thoroughly dried, strip the leaves from the stems and store whole or ground in an airtight container away from heat sources and bright light. You can also dry foliage by spreading leaves flat on a drying rack under the same conditions.Air dry in a warm, dry, well-ventilated room for a week. Preserve leaves by hanging the foliage upside down in small bunches. Many people use dried or frozen basil during the cold months when fresh basil is unavailable. The clove-like aroma and flavor is a wonderful seasoning in both Western and Asian foods. Highly decorative with purple stems and flowers.įresh basil is best. An upright, well-branched plant with flavor and fragrance distinctly different from other basils. Use in dried arrangements, potpourri, vinegars and jellies. The flavor and fragrance in both foliage and flowers is very spicy. This variety offers dark green shiny leaves and pink flowers. Use ornamentally in most garden settings, fresh floral arrangements or herb vinegars. A very versatile variety that has red-purplish foliage and pink flowers. Fine-leafed plant with distinct lemon fragrance. Produces large, crinkled green leaves that have a sweeter flavor than other varieties. This is a good indoor plant as it is slower to go to seed than most other types. Use green foliage in many dishes as well as a nice edging or border because of small, compact plant size. Due to the emergence of basil downy mildew, it is important to choose a variety resistant to this disease. There are many other varieties offering both ornamental value and unique fragrances. Traditional sweet basil, Ocimum basilicum, is the most popular variety, used primarily for culinary purposes such as pesto and tomato dishes. Not a good sandwich… Stick with snacks and beer at a brewery… The brisket looked good, but it was dry… Although it had a nice seasoning, but you that really didn’t help. He wasn’t feeling the side of chips either, so, without really reading the menu, he substituted with coleslaw… Since it already comes with a side of coleslaw, he got double the coleslaw! LOL. It is made with house smoked TX-style brisket, finished with their house made TX-style BBQ sauce on a potato brioche bun. My hubby went with Texas-Style Brisket Sandwich ($18). The fries were nice, crispy exterior with potato-y inside. It was a good burger, not great, but good. The patty was juicy, and cheese melted over just perfectly. It comes with chips, but I substituted Fries for another $2. I went with a BYO Burger ($14), made with 1/4 lb Angus beef patty, served on a toasted potato brioche bun with iceberg lettuce, tomato and their signature sauce. Since it is not recommend to consume alcohol in empty stomach, and we were there for lunch anyways, we ordered some hearty dishes. The tray was in a shape of harpoon, which was extra cool! It had some fun shaped beer tap handles, all vivid and colorful.Īnd I am happy report, they do offer flight of beer here at Harpoon Brewery! You get to choose four different kinds of beer, and they come in 6 oz glasses. The bar counter was massive too, it went from the beginning of the dining area, going all the way to the back wall. You could choose between regular table, high top, or the counter seats. You could see the outdoor scene through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows, as they bring in loads of natural light as well. The dining area was nice and big, with super high ceiling that makes the room feel even larger. Maybe next time we visit, when we are back to normal life again… But, due to the pandemic, they were not offering tour at that time. We could see the brewery behind the store, and it would have been really cool to get a tour of the place. It had a nice sized store attached to it, where you can buy all sorts of merchandise, and of course, some beers to take home with. They had a wall full of beer bottles near the entrance, fun to look at all the designs of the bottles and its labels. We were greeted warmly, and taken to our seat right away. We had a reservation, which was required at that time, no matter if it was during peak or off-peak hours. We opted to sit indoor, where it was nice and cool. They had kind of a grand entrance with wood frames, and lots and lots of outdoor seating. It was convenient if you wanted to visit multiple place, as you can just leave your car parked wherever, and walk across the parking lot. It was located near other shops and eateries, such as SILO Distillery and Blake Hill Preserves. So, during our stay in Vermont in the summer, we visited Harpoon Brewery Taproom and Beer Garden in Windsor. We had fun visiting different breweries with interesting tours in the past. If they have a flight or tasting at a bar or a brewery, we almost always get it. We enjoy trying out new food and drinks, and my hubby especially enjoy trying out new beers.
